Glaucoma is an eye condition that damages the optic nerve. As this nerve gradually gets worse, blind spots develop in your vision and can further lead to blindness. It is often caused by raised eye pressure because of the buildup of the fluid (aqueous humor) that flows inside the eye. Open-angle glaucoma has no symptoms in early stages, gradually blind spots can develop and lead to central and peripheral vision difficulties. Glaucoma with symptoms like severe eye pain, frequent headaches, eye redness, nausea, vomiting, blurred vision and halos or colored rings around the light, occur in Acute-angle closure type. Risk factors include diabetes, hypertension, poor blood circulation, high eye pressure, having family history of glaucoma, people above 40 years of age and children also. A complete eye examination helps in the diagnosis and treatment typically involves medications, eye drops and laser surgery. Regular eye checkups can help to prevent glaucoma in the early stages.
