Behcet's Disease

Behcet's disease, also called Behcet's syndrome is a disorder that causes inflammation in the blood vessels throughout the body. The exact cause of Behcet's is unknown but it may be an autoimmune disorder which means the body's immune system mistakenly attacks some of its own healthy cells. Genetic and environmental factors may be accountable for Behcet's disease.

The symptoms for this condition vary from person to person and depend on the area of the body affected. The areas that are commonly affected by Behcet's disease include:

• Genital sores
• Inflammation in the eye, a condition called Uveitis
• Painful mouth sores
• Joint swelling and pain
• Skin lesions
• Abdominal pain, diarrhoea or bleeding
• Inflammation in the brain and nervous system - headache, fever, poor balance, disorientation or stroke

Behcet's disease may come and go on its own in periods of flares and remissions. If your signs and symptoms of this condition are mild, your doctor may prescribe medications to control temporary flares in pain and inflammation. Factors including your age and sex may influence the specific treatment your doctor recommends.
