Blepharitis

This is an inflammation of the eyelids, usually caused by an excess growth of bacteria. Blepharitis commonly occurs when tiny oil glands located near the base of the eyelashes malfunction. This is an often chronic condition that is difficult to treat and can be uncomfortable and may be unattractive, but it doesn't cause permanent damage to the eyesight.

The exact cause of this condition isn't clear. The factors that are associated with the development of Blepharitis include:

• Rosacea
• A bacterial infection
• Seborrheic dermatitis (dandruff of the scalp and the eyebrows)
• Eyelash lice or mites
• Allergies including allergies to eye makeup and contact lens
• Certain medications

The symptoms of Blepharitis include:

• Dry eyes
• Sensitivity to lights
• Blurry vision
• Feeling like something is in your eye
• Burning of the eye
• Crusting of the eyelashes
• Watery eyes
• Itchy eyes
• Red swollen eyelids
• Red eyes
• Flaking of the skin around the eyes
