  • Make sure your kids wear closed shoes and thick close - fitting cotton clothes while playing with fireworks. For the girls, make sure the dupatta is pinned back properly.
  • Ensure that your kids maintain sufficient distance from the fireworks while burning them.
  • Keep a first aid kit and a water bucket handy.

Special care needs to be taken to keep the family members at home comfortable.

  • Family members with respiratory problems such as asthma, common cold and sinusitis must be kept away from places with high concentration of fumes. Advised them to use masks especially while going out. Nebulizers and inhalers should to be kept handy, as chemical fumes from fireworks make it difficult to breath.
  • Use ear plugs to minimize excessive noise from fireworks as sound of crackers might damage ear drums in some people and also cause increased heart rate in old people and those with cardiac problems.
  • Stress, hypertension and annoyance are usually seen during this period. Have patience to handle them, and anticipate these changes in the elderly.
  • Always wear full sleeved cotton clothes and wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water to get rid of the strong chemicals from fire crackers to avoid any kind of skin infection.
  • Cover your eyes with googles and wash your hands a number of times to protect your eyes from harmful chemicals of fire crackers.
  • Keep babies inside the home to minimize the sounds of crackers and the smoke from burning crackers.
  • Keep a first aid kit handy for emergency purpose.
  • Make sure you have the emergency numbers noted down – numbers of doctors, fire station, police station, etc. in case of any emergency.

If you have a pet at home, here are few things you should take care of:

  • Pets have a heightened sense of hearing, so keep them in a familiar room indoors.
  • Keep the windows and doors of that room closed. Draw the curtains to reduce noise.
  • Keep your fireworks away from your pets.
  • Ensure someone is there with them to comfort them.
  • Keep water and food handy.
  • If your pet is prone to acute anxiety due to loud noise, consult with your veterinarian. Check his availability during the festival, in case of an emergency.

Note- Use environment friendly lights and Diya’s to decorate your house.
