Common health concerns of women (60s & beyond)

A period of healthy aging

Common concerns for women in their 60s include declining physical and mental health, financial issues and dependence on others. But there's much to savor about being in your 60s too especially if you've made healthy lifestyle choices throughout your life. And even if you haven't, start taking care of yourself now, and set your sights on good health in the years ahead, then the Risk of heart disease, ovarian, uterine & breast cancer, risk of osteoporosis, risk of Diabetes, obesity, osteoarthritis (a joint disorder that usually affects the hips, knees, feet, and spine) increases.

To overcome these risk factors, there are few tips listed:

  • Motivate your metabolism: While metabolism typically slows up to 5 percent per decade, that doesn't mean you have to gain weight in your 60s. Just stay active and cut bad calories if needed.
  • Reduce your heart disease risk: An older heart can pump about the same volume of blood with each beat as a younger one can. To reduce your heart disease risk, know your blood pressure, total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglycerides, fasting blood glucose, body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference and keep them within a healthy range.
  • Preserve your senses: Lifestyle plays a major role in helping to maintain your senses as you age. So stay away from loud noises, eat a well-balanced diet.
  • Improve your sex life: Sex in your 60s can be better than ever. You've got more time and fewer distractions. And getting older often means becoming more comfortable in your own skin.
  • Ramp up your immunity: Allergies, which result from an over-reactive immune system, are probably a thing of the past because your immune system isn't as sensitive.
  • Stay sharp: Mental impairment, confusion, and dementia can have a severe impact on your quality of life and independence as you grow older. Keep your mind sharp by ensuring an adequate intake of omega-3 fatty acids and protein, and a good balance of vitamins and minerals, particularly the B vitamins.

Note: Annual health checks are extremely essential. Medications and dos and don’ts must be followed as per recommendations suggested by a medical practitioner/nutritionist.
