Nail fungus is a fungal infection in one of more of your nails. This infection may make its beginning in the form of a white or yellow spot under the tip of your nail. As it progresses, it spreads deeper into your nail, leads to discolouration, thickening and development of crumbling edges. This can turn into a painful problem if not treated on time.
Symptoms:
You may have a nail infection, also called as Onychomycosis if one or more of your nails are:
• Brittle or crumbly
• Thickened
• Distorted in shape
• Dull, with no lustre or shine
• A dark colour, caused by debris building up under your nail
Causes:
Nail fungal infections are typically caused by a fungus that belongs to a group of fungi called Dermatophytes. Yeasts and molds are also responsible for nail fungal infections.
Risk factors:
Aging is the most common risk factor for nail fungus for several reasons including:
• Diminished blood circulation
• More years of exposure to fungi
• Nails may grow slower and thicken with age, making them more susceptible to infections
• Perspiring heavily
• Having skin conditions like Psoriasis
• Having an athlete's foot (tinea pedia)
• Wearing sock and shoes that hamper ventilation and don't absorb perspiration
• Walking bare footed in damp public places, a damaged nail or another infection
• Having diabetes, circulation problems or a weakened immune system
• Having a minor nail or skin injury
Treatment:
Antifungal medications will be given based on the severity of the fungal infection.
