This is a condition in which a woman experiences severe depression symptoms, irritability and nervousness before menstruation. These symptoms are more severe than those seen with premenstrual syndrome. The exact cause of PMDD is unknown but it is believed that it may be a result of the interaction between the hormones produced by the ovaries at different stages of the menstrual cycle and neurotransmitters in the brain.
The symptoms of PMDD occur during the week just before the menstrual period, and generally improve within a few days after the period starts. The symptoms include:
• Feelings of anxiety and tension
• Fatigue
• Lack of interest in daily activities and relationships
• Feelings of hopelessness, sadness and possible suicidal thoughts
• Panic attacks
• Trouble concentrating
• Problem sleeping
• Mood swings
• Anger or irritability that affects other people
• Change in appetite
• Hypersomnia or insomnia
• Physical problems such as headaches, bloating or muscle pain
Self-help measures:
• Eat healthy foods such as vegetables, fruits or whole grains and avoid sugar, alcohol, salt and caffeine
• Try to keep up with social activities even if you don't feel like it
• Expose yourself to a little bit of sunlight everyday
• Exercise regularly
• Practice relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, yoga or meditation
