Urinary Tract Infections

A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection caused in any part of the urinary tract - kidneys, urethra, uterus, or bladder. Women are more prone to UTI than men.

Some of the symptoms of UTI include:

  1. Burning sensation and pain during urination.
  2. Foul smelling urine.
  3. Passing urine frequently and in small quantities.
  4. Back ache and pain in the groin region.
  5. Low grade fever.
  6. Difficulty in passing the urine.
  7. Reduced amount of urine.

Common Causes:

  • Urinary bladder infection
  • Urethral Infection
  • Renal infections
  • Prostate Infections

Common organisms causing UTI are: E.coli, Staphylococcus, Candida species.

Tests:

  • Urine culture and sensitivity
  • Urine dipstick test
  • Urine Microscopy complete

Further Investigations may be required on the basis of clinical and microscopic indications.

Treatment:

It is important to find the underlying cause and treat it as per culture and sensitivity report. Your doctor may prescribe you antibiotics or antifungal pills. Other medicines like corticosteroids, anti-inflammatory pills might also be prescribed if required.

Some tips to stay away from UTI:

1. Practicing general hygiene during and after sex, and while using toilets can reduce the chances.
2. Drink about 8 -10 glasses of water in a day.
3. Avoid eating spicy food and include lot of fluids in your diet.
4. Increase vitamins and minerals in the form of fruits and raw vegetables in your diet.
5. Improve your immune system by increasing your intake of omega 3 fatty acid foods such as fish and walnuts etc.
6. Avoid alcohol and smoking.

It is important to recognize that pregnant women and people with immune suppressed states are more prone to developing UTI, Therefore it is imperative to routinely perform the urine dipstick test.
