What Causes Swelling or Oedema?

Oedema is a medical term for swelling and it can be defined as the accumulation of excess fluid in the tissue of the body. Although it can affect your entire body it is more noticeable in hands, arms, legs, feet, and ankle. And can cause puffiness, tightness, and pain over the affected area.

  • Prolonged standing or sitting at one place.
  • Pregnancy
  • Too much intake of salt
  • Poor nutrition
  • Allergic reaction
  • Venous insufficiency
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Kidney disease
  • Cirrhosis of liver

  • Hypothyroidism
  • Severe deficiency of protein for the longer duration
  • The improper functioning of the lymphatic system
  • Side effects of certain medication- Steroids, NSAIDs, the medicine of diabetes and hypertension.
